This can include retaining walls, paved areas, driveways or any other landscape feature made up of hard-wearing materials such as concrete, masonry, stone etc. as opposed to the horticultural elements of a landscape.

In urban environments, hardscapes can include massive features such as paved roads. Most water features are also considered hardscapes because they require a barrier to prevent water from draining directly into the surrounding soil.
