Why Probuilt for Decks

We offer many different deck styles and designs. Our deck building team is second to none when it comes to craftsmanship, durability and longevity. All of our decks are constructed with pressure treated frames utilizing double rim joists and carriage beams when applicable. Joists are set on twelve to sixteen inch centers, and are 2" by 10" unless we are decking over existing frames, or ground height is an issue. At Probuilt Pool & Patio, we build our decks to last. Before going any further with a search for a deck contractor in the Kansas City area, please make sure you require the contractor to be licensed and insured. Sticking to those requirements for any selected contractor will save you time and difficulty in the long run.

Types of decks we offer:

  1. Pressure treated Decks
These decks are constructed with lumber that has been impregnated with a variety of preservative chemicals to prevent rot and insect infestation in exterior applications. Many species of wood can be treated. Pressure treated lumber is ideal for outdoor construction as it has a long, useful life span, and is much less expensive than alternatives. Treated wood can last more than 40 years in some cases. The downfall to using this product as a decking material is that the sun warps, twist, cracks and discolor the product very rapidly. This product also requires costly maintenance. We have discovered most decks using this product as top decking will have a lifespan of about 12-15 years before replacement is needed. The same product used as the deck frame yields far more life to the deck as it is not subject to the same direct sunlight or standing water conditions.
  2. Cedar decks
Cedar decks offer much of the same longevity as treated decks, however they tend to have less warping and splintering. Cedar decks offer a very attractive appearance when first placed, continue to hold a beautiful look when treated with a sealer. This natural wood look will grey within the first year if not treated with a sealer, and should be maintained at least once every two years. We find that Cedar decks in the Kansas City area tend to last twelve years to fifteen years before replacement is needed.
  3. Composite decking
Long-term quality is incredibly important to Probuilt, and for that reason we consider composite decking to be an overpriced and failed product. Composite decking severely fades in its first year. Many of the fastening systems for composite decking are top screws which degrade the beauty and longevity of the product from the first day. As a deck contractor for many years we have found cases of composite decks in the Kansas City area to deteriorate from the inside out. Wood and glue is the common components of composite, and in our climate that spells trouble. If directed, we will install composite, but we will not warranty any aspect of the product. Ask to watch our three year case study video during a free in-home consultation. This test was performed on pressure treated, composite, and PVC decking products.
  4. PVC decking
PVC decking, also referred by its brand names, Azek, Tuff, and Clubhouse are composed entirely of polyvinyl chloride also known as (PVC) and contain no wood. Our PVC decking is a more expensive option over products such as treated, cedar or composite, but it provides significant fade and stain resistance with lower maintenance requirements. These products when installed correctly have a hidden fastener systems to add a more elegant look and feel to decking. PVC decking has many color and wood look options to fit your design and style requirements. Some draw backs to PVC decking in the Kansas City area are expanding and contraction with our climate change, as well as darker colors tend to reflect more heat. PVC decking requires joist to be set on 16” centers, but we place our joist on 12” centers when building new as recommended. These boards as well as all decking material can be improperly installed, so it’s important to hire the right contractor. If installed improperly this expensive product can look extremely cheap. We recommend limiting a contractor search to those with actual certified product installers like Probuilt Pool & Patio.
  5. Synthetic decking
Widely considered Deckorators answer to PVC, this advanced technology has by far the best warranty in the industry. This includes 25/25/25 on stain, fade, material, structural, removal and replacement. Virtually indestructible and unable to retain moisture this decking product is the next big thing from a company that has been in the industry for many years. The downfall to this product is color choices as it’s only been on the market for a very short time.
  6. Exotic hardwood decking
Ipe, Kyun,Tigerwood, and bamboo are just a few exotic hardwood decks we offer. Found in the Brazilian rainforest our hardwoods offer a lasting beauty that is second to none in decking material. Hardwoods take a special craftsman that has knowledge of the installation process and maintenance or this beautiful product. The homeowner can expect 25 plus years when properly installed and maintained.
